Our wheat sustainability commitment

JUNE 17, 2021

We’re committed to sustainably sourcing 50% of our wheat ingredients by 2025. Since the launch of our sustainable wheat program in 2017, we’ve created partnerships to measure and track farm-level sustainability in the regions where we source wheat for our snacks. In fiscal year 2020, we enrolled 70,000 acres of wheat into our corporate sustainability program, representing 19% of our wheat supply.

Today, we’re proud to announce new partnerships designed to expand environmental stewardship across thousands of farm acres.

Progress so far

This year, we began collaborating with a new agricultural retailer partner in Ohio, expanding the work we are doing within the Land O’Lakes Truterra network in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. We reached exciting milestones last year, including announcing our progress in reducing net greenhouse gas emissions in farmer-led stewardship and helping to improve fertilizer use on 70,000 acres of wheat one year ahead of schedule.

Meet our new partners

We also established two new partnerships to work directly with our own flour mill suppliers to advance wheat farm sustainability:

Star of the West

Star of the West works with ag retailers like Deerfield Ag Services to supply wheat to our Willard, Ohio, plant—also known as the Goldfish capital of the world.

“We’re excited to join Campbell in pursuing sustainability at the farm level. The first step in the sustainability journey is to work with Ohio retailers and their growers to understand the local farming practices around wheat. We aim to showcase what the farms are already doing to improve their operations, and then work together to help make them even more sustainable.”

– Lisa Woodke, Sustainability Director at Star of the West

Ardent Mills

Ardent Mills supplies flour to our Richmond, Utah, plant which also makes Goldfish crackers and Pepperidge Farm cookies.

“Our partnership helps farmers in Campbell’s supply regions be more productive and profitable, which is key to creating sustainable food systems for the future.”

– Phoenix Dugger, Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility at Ardent Mills

Sustainable wheat in your favorite Campbell Snacks

The expansion of our sustainable wheat partnerships helps us equip growers to build soil health, protect local watersheds, mitigate climate change, and strengthen farm profitability. It’s about protecting the natural resources that we all value and depend on—and this makes snacking all the more enjoyable!

With the launch of these new partnerships, our corporate wheat sustainability program now covers the supply regions for all three of our Campbell Snacks plants—in Richmond, Utah, Willard, Ohio, and Denver, Pennsylvania—where we make Goldfish crackers and Pepperidge Farm cookies, including Farmhouse and Milano.
